8.1. Footnote references

References to footnotes can appear as figures, asterisks and letters, and are identical in all language versions.

References to footnotes appear in an identical way in all the language versions; they can take the following forms:

  • Figure in superscript between brackets (brackets are not in superscript), preceded by a thin space and followed by any punctuation:

    References to the Commission Regulation(1) also appear in the Council communication(2); but not in text of the Court of Justice(3).

    For full details, see the external contractor’s study (‘the study’)(1).

    In the public consultation, many stakeholders described the approach as ‘excessively complex’(2).

  • Asterisk between brackets, preceded by a thin space and followed by any punctuation; this sign is employed for a note that, in a given work or periodical, appears more than once and that always has the same meaning:

    (*)

    Indicates lower limit of analytical determination.

    NB:

    In amending acts in the Official Journal, asterisks are used to indicate footnotes in the text being amended. These footnotes have the same font size as the text, and they are placed immediately below the amended text.

    Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/1793 is amended as follows:

    1. Article 3 is amended as follows:
      1. point (a) is replaced by the following:

        '(a)

        for food listed in Annexes I and II due to possible contamination risk by mycotoxins, including aflatoxins, the sampling and the analyses shall be performed in accordance with Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2782 (*);

        (*)

        Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2782 of 14 December 2023 laying down the methods of sampling and analysis for the control of the levels of mycotoxins in food and repealing Regulation (EC) No 401/2006 (OJ L, 2023/2782, 15.12.2023, ELI: http://data.europa.eu/eli/reg_impl/2023/2782/oj).’;

      2. point (d) is deleted;
  • Exceptionally, a lower-case superscript letter may be used in tables with figures in very small print so as to avoid errors and confusion:

    Code number Groups and examples of individual products to which the MRLs apply (a) Fenbuconazole (sum of constituent enantiomers) Penconazole (sum of constituent isomers) (F)

    (1)

    (2)

    (3)

    (4)

    0100000

    FRUITS, FRESH or FROZEN; TREE NUTS

    (a)
    For the complete list of products of plant and animal origin to which MRL's apply, reference should be made to Annex I.

The reference to a footnote (including the brackets) is always composed in light roman (even in texts or headings written in italics or bold).

When a reference to a footnote appears in a table the note must form part of the table and consequently appear within the frame of the table.
